PS5 and PS4 System Software Updates worldwide

Updates to the PS5 and PS4 system software are currently rolling out globally, so we thought we’d give you a quick overview of some of the new features. We’re also excited to share new information about Variable Refresh Rate for PS5, which will be available in the coming months on HDMI 2.1-compatible TVs and computer monitors.

New PS5 and PS4 features

We’re launching some fan-requested features to our global community today thanks to the support of our beta testers, including the ability to start or join Open and Closed Parties on PS5 and PS4 consoles. Additionally, we’re bringing accessibility features like mono audio for headphones and UI improvements to Game Base and Trophy cards for PS5.

Players of the PS5 with accounts linked to the US or UK will be able to try out the Voice Command (Preview) feature, which enables voice control of media playback in addition to finding and opening games, apps, and settings (English language setting only)

We’re gradually introducing the capability for PS App users to start or join Open and Closed Parties through the app starting later today. In order to provide a consistent player experience with PS5, we’ve also updated the PS App Game Base UI to make it simpler to access the Friends, Parties, and messaging features. The PS5 will soon support variable refresh rates

We’re also happy to announce that the PS5 version of Variable Refresh Rate (VRR) will be available soon. VRR dynamically synchronizes the refresh rate of the display to the PS5 console’s graphical output on TVs and PC monitors that support HDMI 2.1. This improves the visual performance of PS5 games by reducing or getting rid of visual artifacts like stuttering and screen tearing. Many PS5 games have smoother gameplay thanks to instant scene rendering, sharper graphics, and decreased input lag. Future games may include VRR support right out of the gate, and PS5 games that have already been released can be fully optimized for VRR through a game patch.

You can also decide to apply VRR to PS5 games that do not support it as an additional option. Some games may benefit from this feature’s improved video quality. You can always disable this option if it produces any unexpected visual effects.
