The application can be submitted at any U.S. embassy or consulate. The process is relatively fast and is limited only by the availability of visas.

The first step is to fill out an application on the website of the U.S. Department of State. After creating an account and logging in, applicants will see a list of all the required documents. These usually include a passport, a photo, proof of funds and travel itinerary, and a Hungary police clearance certificate.

During this time, the Soviet Union tightly controlled travel between its satellite countries and the rest of the world. As a result, it was very difficult for Hungarian citizens to obtain a visa to travel outside of the Soviet bloc.
