How To Maintain Data Privacy On Cloud

Over the few years, cloud services have gained prominence among businesses and individuals. Cloud services have provided us with the flexibility of accessing data anytime, anywhere, and on any device.

But with this flexibility comes the danger of data breaching. As the data in the cloud services is online 24×7, there is a huge possibility of data breaching. Hackers are constantly in the loop of breaching the data of governments, reputed organizations, and renowned people.

Data breaching can lead to huge losses. Therefore, it is essential to protect the data in cloud services. Though you can’t protect it entirely, there are a few ways you can ensure privacy to some extent.

Here are the ways in which you can maintain data privacy on the cloud.

  1. Use Strong Password

Protect your data using a strong password since a weaker one is easily predictable. A strong password should have a minimum of 12 characters, including numbers, symbols, capital, and lowercase letters.

You should also use the Two Factor Authentication feature with a strong password. It creates an extra layer of security by confirming the user’s identity twice.

  1. Encrypt the Data

Data Encryption prevents hackers from accessing your data on the cloud. Encryption is the conversion of data into secret codes. These secret codes are tough to decipher. Only a hacker with cryptography skills might decode them.

Encryption also sets passwords for your files so that if hackers access the database, they can’t get into individual files. Hence select the Cloud service provider, which encrypts data. Also, make sure the cloud service provider provides you with cloud based pki services. PKI is public key infrastructure. It’s used for the authentication of users and devices.

  1. Activate File Backup and Recovery Options

If your data is accidentally deleted or hacked, the backed-up data or recovery option can save you. Today, most cloud services come with file backup and recovery options. So, activate these and create a backup of your data.

With the recovery feature, you can recover the data from a specific point in time. Cloud services store data for many days after its deletion from the main file. The days range from 30 to 180 days, depending upon the cloud service provider.

  1. Avoid Uploading Sensitive Information

Though cloud services are used to store all data in one place, it is essential to avoid uploading sensitive information. Avoid uploading files with passwords or log in credentials. Doing so can restrict hackers from accessing your other pieces of sensitive information. You can save confidential data on your computer or any external storage device.

    1. Secure Your Devices with Anti-Virus Program

You are continuously exposed to bugs and viruses while using cloud service. They enter your device through downloaded files, weak links, or external storage devices.

These bugs and viruses are the entry point for hackers to access your data. Therefore, you need to secure your devices. Install anti-virus software on your devices to help prevent suspicious downloads and possible theft.

Apart from anti-virus, use a VPN while accessing data online. VPN stands for the virtual private network. It creates a secure and encrypted connection to ensure your data is safe.

  1. Be Careful While Using Public Systems and Networks

The security of your cloud data also depends on your online activity on public platforms. While working on a shared computer, do you ensure to log out properly or opt not to save your password? Not doing so exposes you to the risk of strangers accessing your account and sensitive information.

Do you also connect unsecured Wi-Fi connections in public areas? Such connections are unsecure and help hackers easily access your accounts. Thus, make sure you only use encrypted public connections and don’t opt to save your login details on a public computer.

  1. Examine Connected Apps, Devices, and Accounts

Connected apps, devices, and accounts can be an alternative option for hackers to access your data. So, regularly review permissions given to third-party apps and accounts to back up your info. Also, ensure to disconnect cloud services in old devices while upgrading to the new ones.

  1. Read Policies of Cloud Service Provider

Understanding how cloud service providers function is essential. You should know how they store your data and what information it collects about you. Knowing the functioning of cloud service providers allows you to use their services effectively.

As a result, read the policies of the cloud service provider carefully. In the policy, you must look for the following points:

  • What type of files can be uploaded?
  • What information do they collect about you?
  • How long do they keep your data after the deactivation of your account?

Conclusion

We have covered the best ways to protect data privacy on the cloud. If you can implement these tips as a part of your strategy, you are on the path to protecting your data effectively on the cloud.
