How to Extend Your Pool Room Dehumidifier’s Life Expectancy

The pool room dehumidifier is the most important piece of HVAC equipment for preventing mold, mildew, and corrosion in the pool room structure. When equipped, it controls the relative humidity, room heating, and cooling, and can also maintain the proper pool water temperature. Assuming that the correct capacity dehumidification system was initially selected, the owner can expect many long years of service as long as he or she follows a proper maintenance schedule.

For the purposes of this discussion, it will be assumed that a properly sized dehumidification system was initially selected and installed in accordance with the DCA installation and service manual. It is also assumed that the air distribution system, known as ductwork, was installed according to the manual using best practises.

  1. Air filters

Dehumidifiers have a return air filter that must be replaced on a regular basis if it becomes dirty. Do not use the dehumidifier without a filter.

  1. Belts for blowers

The dehumidifier air circulation blower belt should be checked for proper tension at least twice a year and replaced as needed.

  1. Connections to electricity

Once a year, the electrical connections in the dehumidifier electrical box must be checked for tightness. Arcing can be caused by loose connections, which reduces the life of various components. Loose connections can cause fires in extreme cases.

  1. Grills

It is critical to avoid accidentally closing intake or discharge grills or registers, as this alters air flow within the system.

  1. Design/Maintenance of a Pool Room Dehumidifier

A pool room dehumidification system is not something you install and forget about. Proper maintenance is required, and performing it at the appropriate times should ensure many years of trouble-free operation. A properly installed duct system will direct dehumidified air on all outside-facing glass windows, doors, and skylights, assisting in the reduction of accumulated moisture on the glass surfaces. Furthermore, it will ensure that all of the air in the room is circulated through the dehumidifier approximately six times per hour, eliminating any dead spots.

Pool room dehumidifiers are typically installed alongside the pool water heater and filter in a mechanical room. Because of their corrosive nature, chemicals used in pool water, such as chlorine and bromine, should not be stored in the same room. They will attack any metal surface, causing the dehumidifier, pool water filter, and heater to fail prematurely. Instead, they must be kept in a tightly sealed container in another location.

Every six months, the pool room dehumidifier should be serviced.

  1. Coils

Check all coils for dirt or other residue buildup and clean them as needed. Create a checklist and maintenance service plan based on the steps outlined above, and make it available to all personnel involved in pool room dehumidifier maintenance procedures. This ensures that all steps are carried out during each six-month maintenance cycle.

  1. Temperature and humidity controls

To ensure the proper level of room relative humidity and temperature, dehumidifier humidity and temperature controls should be checked for accuracy on a regular basis.

  1. Draining pans

During scheduled maintenance, empty the unit is the drain pan and clean out any residue buildup that has occurred.
