Brachycephalic Obstructive Away Syndrome
English Bulldogs are one of the most popular dog breeds for Brachycephalic Obstructive Airway Syndrome (BOAS). The condition is caused by an array of anatomical abnormalities. These include a narrowed nose, elongated soft mouth of the upper jaw, swelling in the nasal passages and compressed/distorted nasal passages. Combining these abnormalities can cause difficulty in breathing and a lack of oxygen.
Because of their brachycephalic, short-faced nature, the English Bulldog already has, or could develop, many or all of the BOAS anatomical problems. Due to their brachycephalic nature, the English Bulldog is sensitive to extreme temperatures and more prone to overheating.
Their brachycephalic faces are also responsible for the distinctive snorting sound and snoring sounds of the English Bulldog.
