Run Fail…Moving On!
So my 9 mile run I had planned for this morning didn’t go as well as I hoped. Maverick came along with me and was being such a pain the whole time, stopping at every tree, laying in the sidewalk when he saw another dog he wanted to meet, pooping around mile 2 and making me hold a stinky poop bag for a couple more miles til I could find a trash can, and then just refusing to go any further at mile 4. Last time he came with me I had no problems and we did the full 7! So, after 4 miles we headed home. I was going to go back out, but once I was inside I couldn’t find the motivation to go back out.
The truth is, I wasn’t feeling the run from the beginning, my body didn’t settle in and I couldn’t find a pace where I was feeling good…which probably would have happened if I had brought Mav or not.
The good news is…the shins weren’t hurting! So that’s a plus. I decided that I’m not going to let this bad run bring me down (although it did for about 30 minutes) and I’m just going to go back out tomorrow to try again. I would like to do the full 9, but at the very least I’m going to finish the 5 I didn’t get to today.
Also, I’m excited for date night with Mike tonight. We are going to Central Blue, a popular martini & tapas restaurant nearby. I’ve been wanting to check it out for awhile so I’m looking forward to it.
I think that for now I’ll take a nap.
How do you handle bad run days? Or just bad exercise days in general?

Bad runs really used to mess with me mentally, but anymore I just take it for what it is, a bad run. I know that there will always be bad runs and good runs, and rarely two bad runs in a row. So hopefully tomorrow will be a good run for you!
absolutely! thank you!
Be thankful that you can get up in the morning and simply walk. Trust me. I used to be a runner. So stuff happens. I’ve had and currently have that taken from me. I’m blessed to be able to walk. Even if it doesn’t feel ever enough or ever good.
Trust me- in a couple days you’ll feel amazing and have a great 9 mile run. Everybody has those days – it’s better to take an easy day than burn yourself out forcing yourself to run 9 today.
you’re right!
A bad run is still better than sitting on the couch or being injured, it means you are still able to get out there
. When you have “one of those days” smile say I did what could, write it down in your log and let it go. It doesn’t do any good to beat yourself up over something you can’t change. Look at it, what could you do differently to make it a better run next time, what did you learn from this run – anything? Then go do something else you find fun!
After a bad exercise day, I promise myself that tomorrow is my second chance and push myself even further.
i realize that there’s a reason my body just isn’t cooperating and move on. My IT band and shin was hurting today which made me realize I need a break!
I needed to read this today. I am still bummed about my failed 18 miler yesterday. Like you, I just never felt it from the start. I felt crappy by mile 3 and should have called it quits but decided to keep pushing – hoping that my body would settle down. I couldn’t run within 20 sec of my target pace for the day. By 6 1/2 miles, I was getting shaky and queasy and had to make my way back to my house (another 1.5 miles). I’m taking today off (I ended up having a fever last night) and am going to try it again tomorrow morning!!
Good luck today – hope your run goes well!!
Oh my gosh! You poor thing you were sick! Another day off will do you well. I hope to try again today and have a better time. I hope you feel better lady! Tomorrow will be great for you!
Aw, sorry about the run! But I’m glad your shins werent hurting!!
I’m glad I’m not the only one who has bad run days. I find them really frustrating. I’ve been trying to find a pattern (I’ve been having a lot of bad ones lately it seems), and all I can think of is the cold weather (I live near Detroit). I also notice if I didn’t hydrate well enough the day BEFORE, it seems to effect me. If you figure anything out, do share!
I will!
